Furniture by Maria
Original Furniture.
Thoughtfully Designed.
Individually Made.
Furniture by Maria is the more creative side of my work — a space where I can explore ideas, experiment with form, materials and finishes, and turn those ideas into distinctive pieces of furniture.
Each design begins with an idea and is developed and handcrafted by me in my Surrey workshop. I enjoy finding interesting ways to combine practical function with strong, considered design, creating furniture that is useful while also bringing something individual to a space.
Designs may begin as one-off pieces or prototypes before being developed into pieces that can be individually made to order, with choices of materials, colours and finishes allowing each version to have its own individual character.
Furniture by Maria is also home to The Alphabet Collection - my growing collection of furniture inspired by the shapes and forms of letters, where familiar letterforms become the starting point for functional, distinctive pieces of furniture. The first designs are currently taking shape in my workshop.
The aim is simple: to create furniture that is practical, beautifully made and a little different from the ordinary.
Made to Order
Furniture by Maria pieces are individually made to order, giving you the opportunity to choose from available finishes, colours and details to make the design your own.
As each piece is individually crafted rather than mass-produced, variations and alternative configurations may also be possible depending on the design.
If you see a piece you'd like to make your own, please get in touch to discuss the options available.
The Alphabet Collection
Coming soon.
A growing collection of original furniture inspired by the forms of letters, each design begins as a prototype before selected pieces become available to be individually made to order.
The first design will be revealed soon.
Other Original Designs
Not every idea begins with a letter.
Alongside The Alphabet Collection, I also design and create individual pieces inspired by a particular function, idea or design challenge.
These original designs give me the freedom to explore different forms, materials and ways of combining practical purpose with something a little unexpected.
Exercise Bench with Weights Storage
Original Prototype - Available to be made to order
Designed to bring exercise and storage together in one considered piece, this multifunctional bench provides dedicated storage for dumbbells while also serving as a practical workout bench.
Cut-outs to either side keep the weights neatly organised and easily accessible, while braked castors allow the bench to be moved when needed and securely positioned during use.
Shown here as the original prototype in its unfinished state, the piece was created to explore and refine the design, proportions and functionality before the application of a final decorative finish.
A functional piece developed around a simple idea - making exercise equipment part of the furniture rather than something that needs to be hidden away.

Office Desk
Original Prototype - Available to be made to order
Designed around the practicalities of working from home, this compact desk combines a generous work surface with integrated storage and a simple, open form.
The design provides space for a laptop to be positioned at a comfortable viewing height while allowing a separate keyboard to be used below. Integrated cubbies keep everyday items within easy reach without encroaching on the main working area.
Shown here as the original prototype in its unfinished state, the piece was created to explore the design, proportions and functionality before the application of a final decorative finish.
Finished with slender hairpin legs, the design creates a practical workspace with a light, contemporary feel - designed around how it is used, rather than simply the space it occupies.
